01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Sushi Ya, sushi is served one piece at a time, with the chef’s work unfolding right in front of you. The counter experience is available at lunch with an omakase nigiri set, or in the evening as an omakase course. One lunch guest described a set of about 14 items followed by dessert; another remembered the medium-fatty tuna and sea urchin. A separate diner appreciated the way each piece of nigiri arrived individually, allowing the character of the ingredients to come through. It’s a meal to savour gradually.

Some of the dishes beyond the nigiri have also made an impression. One diner mentioned monkfish liver with ponzu, while another recalled sea bream and scallop sliced thinly and arranged like a sheet around seaweed. Part of the pleasure of an omakase meal is discovering what small dishes appear along the way.

There is a wide choice of sake. The descriptions can help guide your selection: Bakuren is a crisp, dry option, while Juyondai is noted for its aroma and refined sweetness. Wine is available too, including Chablis by the glass or bottle. You can pair sake with the sushi or build the meal around a drink you particularly enjoy.

The restaurant is centred on counter seating, and one guest remarked on the quiet atmosphere. In this small space, conversation with the chef can be part of the meal, making it a good fit for diners who enjoy hearing about the sushi. Reservations are available for both lunch and dinner, and are recommended for dinner.
